FRENCH WORDS USED IN ENGLISH

cloche, bell CLOCHE
Means "bell" in French, but is also used to mean a transparent
glass cover used to protect young plants
 
CURFEW
Regulation forbidding people to be on the streets after a certain hour. Originally : French - "Couvre feu" - to cover the fire. In the Middle Ages, it referred to announcing the time to put out lights and cover the fire.

Eyeglasses mounted on a handle.
 
MANSARD
Roof with two slopes on each side and the storey under such a roof - from the French architect, Francois Mansard, 1598-1666.

artist's pallette PALETTE
A thin oval board with a thumb hole at one end, used by painters to lay and mix colors.
 
PARACHUTE
Umbrella-type apparatus used to descend gently from a great height

Braid of hair down the back, or a long line of people
